We are looking for a passionate subject matter expert and people leader to be part of the expanding UKG Engineering, Product, Innovation and Cloud (EPIC) Research and Innovation team to support the intellectual property patent protection efforts for our industry-leading suite of Life-Work Technology solutions.

In collaboration with team members across the organization, the Director of Patent Protection will be responsible for supporting the identification of novel solutions to client problems that differentiate UKG in the marketplace. This is a high-visibility and high-impact role with critical responsibilities that will shape the future of UKG’s offerings, drive innovation, and help our customers realize the incredible possibility of UKG. We are committed to finding the best candidate -- well-versed in patent application rules and procedures, capable of deftly communicating technical concepts to wide audiences, and an inventive, curious thinker.

Your work will include evangelizing the importance of patent protection in building industry leading products, being a player-coach to grow a team of professionals in defining and describing novel ideas and collaborating with and influencing peers. The ideal candidate will have an impressive track record in developing successful patent applications, a demonstrated ability to thrive in highly matrixed organizations, and experience growing and developing a team.

Responsibilities to include:
• Participating in research agenda ideation sprints
• Serving as intellectual property subject matter expert
• Performing prior art research and analysis on identified solutions
• Evaluating the patentability of innovations
• Iterating on ideas for patentability with peers
• Providing guidance on a variety of patent and IP-related issues
• Developing and sustaining training on patent processes to scale capability across organization
• Preparing and drafting patent disclosures
• Working with internal and external counsel

This position will be based out of our Lowell MA office, working a hybrid schedule of part time in the office and part time remote each week.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a science discipline, electrical engineering preferred. A Master's degree a plus. Should be registered to practice as a Patent Agent with the USPTO.
• 8+ years experience in intellectual property protection management at a law firm or technology-driven organization, with 3 or more years in a manager position, a proven track record of patent applications and awards.
• Demonstrable work history thriving at the forefront of emerging technologies, leveraging patenting processes to deliver for the customer differentiated capabilities that address market trends, competitive pressures, and available opportunities
• You are an evangelist of how technology can unlock business value and customer experiences
• You can collaborate with multiple teams to enhance our current capabilities and produce the due diligence to help drive solutions roadmap evolution
• You are a skilled listener and communicator, both verbally and written, who can engage colleagues and clients with confidence with your strong presentation skills and able to communicate with people from varying functional areas and levels of responsibility ranging from analysts to C-suite
• If no experience in enterprise software for the workforce directly, you have excellent evidence of your ability to enter a new space and build expertise rapidly.
